Who do I call if I find a skunk/fox/raccoon on my property?
We love in the wilderness. It is normal to see wildlife regularly. If the animal is injured or acting sickly, please call our Town ACO, Newton Animal Control at 973-383-2525 or email animalcontrol@newtontownhall.com.
If the animal does not appear to be in distress, please know that we live in the country and seeing wildlife in their natural environment is normal in Hardwick. (The animal control info also has to be changed under Emergency Contacts)
How can I keep bear and raccoons out of my garbage?
There are “bear-resistant” cans available for purchase in various stores online, however, the best practice is to bring your garbages out just prior to the time it is scheduled to be picked up (ie…. If your garbage collection is scheduled for Fridays at 10 am, we recommend you bring your garbage out Friday morning and do not leave it overnight the night prior.)
I think I saw a rattlesnake or copperhead snake, what do I do?
The Timber Rattlesnake is one of NJ’s most endangered species. Please do not harm or kill the snake. Please take a picture of the snake and call NJ Fish and Wildlife. WARNING: Do NOT approach the snake or get closer just for a photo. If you cannot obtain a photo from a safe distance, just call Fish and Wildlife. Does Hardwick have a social media page that keeps updated information for me to find?
Yes, Hardwick has an “unofficial” page on Facebook called Hardwick (NJ) Information and Public Announcements Page. Anyone is free to join. Our township committee members work diligently to get information out as quickly as possible.
What can I do if a tree comes down and hits a line near/on my property?
Do not touch the tree or go near the area if there are wires down. Contact our DPW team and/or JCPL and the NJSP for assistance.
I’m a senior citizen and I’m looking for find some folks to socialize with. Where can I go to have a nice lunch or talk to others?

Do I have to notify anybody if I want to have a backyard fire?
The burning of leaves, rubbish, or other waste vegetation is prohibited in the State of NJ, however, you can apply for a burn permit through our Town Clerk.
Am I allowed to have a fire pit in my yard?
Recreational fires need to be at least 25ft away from a structure and in an approved container with legs or off the ground. If the fire pit will be located in the ground, a burn permit may be required. Please contact the Town Clerk for further information if you have a question.
I’ve never had a septic system, only sewers. Who can I call to find out more about a septic issue?
There are several very competent and professional companies who service our area. You can research social media pages or perform a quick Google search to find a reputable company to assist you.
My water smells/tastes funny. It reminds me of rotten eggs. What can I do about this?
Well water often produces hydrogen sulfide gas. There are several reputable well maintenance companies located around the area who can assist you with your issues. I have a storage container or shed that I use to keep some large items it. Where can I put it?
Please refer to our town ordinances for assistance as to where a storage container or other large structures may be placed. Size, color, and length of time are outlined. If you have questions, again, you may reach out to our Town Clerk.
I need a ride to town, is there a taxi, Uber, or Lyft service in the area?
We do not have any “regular” Uber or Lyft drivers, however, occasionally there will be somebody available. You may find some additional assistance on our social media page.
Is there a bus that can pick me up?
Hardwick does not have any public transportation in the area.
What can I do to call for help if there is no cell phone service around my home?
Many residents depend on wi-fi calling to have access to their phones/internet. If the internet is down, however, be advised that you may not be able to call out. You may want to consider having a landline phone installed into your home for safety reasons. Our township committee is working diligently to install another cell tower nearby in order to provide full cell coverage to all of our residents.
I heard gunshots. Who can I call?
Hardwick is a rural community. We have a large amount of hunters and folks who target practice regularly throughout the year. There is usually no need for concern. However, if you have trespassers on your property who are shooting nearby your home, please call the NJSP to report the concern
